Melissa Carrasco - Check-out Durations: 3D Visualization

Description

This project visualizes the Seattle Public Library check-in data for the month of November in 2007. The data is categorized by item type: book, dvd, vhs, cd, and audio tape. Within each category the check-in data between the hours of 8am to 4pm are visualized. The data shown is the number of items checked in for the hour and the check-out duration for each item.

The final project is an interactive 3D model that allows the user to navigate through the data and view it from different perspectives.

Project Evolution

Initially, I imagined the visualization to have an organic feel, where the items filled in a space where the dimensions were predefined.

Initial Visualization

I found that this approach lacked in providing the viewer with meaningful information. As the data was reorganized, it moved away from an organic feel to a more structural feel.

Final Visualization

3D Visualization

The interactive visualization was implemented using Processing. Java runtime software needs to be installed in your browser in order to view the visualization.
