What can the DeltaSphere-3000 3D Laser Scanner do for your work?
Capture an entire exhibition, as created, precisely and in photorealistic color.
Add high-resolution, color textures for artwork so when you 'zoom in' to the art in 3D model, they still look great.
Create walk-throughs of the exhibition with pre-defined paths.
Add documentation 'hot spots' with information about particular views.
Provide virtual exhibits for visitors who missed a temporary exhibition - or just want to revisit it.

Laser scanning megalithic art

http://www.heritage3d.org/node/105
The laser scanner used on the project was a NextEngine 3D Scanner HD triangulation scanner (Model 2020i). The instrument was powered by a Kippor Sinemaster 1000 petrol generator and controlled by Scanstudio HD PRO software hosted on a Dell Precision M90 laptop. Data was exported from Scanstudio HD PRO as .xyz files with the bulk of the processing done using Geomagic 10 software.

3D laser scanning services

3Deling has different projects about 3D scanning, shows below.

Digital Photogrammetry

http://www.3deling.com/category/digital-photogrammetry/
For situations where showing the true colours of objects is necessary, we offer digital photogrammetry services. We produce metric orthophoto images with pixel size ranging from a few millimeters to a few tenths of a millimeter.

The high quality of ortho images and their ability to capture true colours make it a very useful process for heritage building surveys. In projects where pixel size can be from 2 to 3mm, we propose using 3D laser scanning to create ortho images. This enables us to significantly shorten the time and reduce the cost of the projects. To learn more, take a look at a point cloud visualisation

Postindustrial building in Lodz

http://www.3deling.com/postindustrial-building-lodz/
The object was erected in the mid 19th century as a factory building, the investor planned to convert it into a modern office space. The heritage conservator required not only elevations, all floor plans and sections but also high resolution orthoimages of two main elevations. In this project we combined traditional fotogrametry with 3d laser scanning to produce orthoimages with pixel size 2mm.

3d Scanning in Lazienki – Warsaw

http://www.3deling.com/3d-scanning-lazienki-warsaw/
Park and museum Lazienki complex in Warsaw announced a public bid for scanning the main buildings. 3Deling was engaged in this project as a subcontractor by one of the companies that won the bid to measure the main building in Lazienki – “Palac na Wodzie”. Our client commissioned 3d scanning, generating black and white orthoimages from point cloud, and colored elevation images as a background for AutoCAD operators who cloud produce 2D elevations CAD drawings.

Art Nouveau Cultural heritage site Warsaw

http://www.3deling.com/art-nouveau-cultural-heritage/
We performed laser scanning of the entire facility the outside and inside, including cellars and the roof. The final deliverable was 2d data floor plans, sections and views of fasades. By integrating the laser scanning and precise Totalstation, we have obtained very high accuracy output, the maximum registration error for the entire project was 5mm.

Hoa Hakananai’a Laser Scan Project

http://www.eisp.org/10/
The on-going research conducted by EISP is a complex effort that is designed to study the monolithic statues fully within their archaeological and geographical contexts. Because of the broad and deep range of data it encompasses, this project has the ability to address a wide variety of research questions. Further, it is the single most valuable site and statue conservation tool currently available on Easter Island. The addition of the data gathered during this scanning project, as well as that being gathered at other museums, will provide one-fourth of the total iconographic data available world-wide on the basalt statues of Easter Island. It will further the understanding of Easter Island museum object history; it will strengthen iconographic baseline and comparative data for the island as a whole, and it will clarify the use of ethnographic information to explain archaeological phenomena.

CISA3, UCSD

http://cisa3.calit2.net/
The Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3) was launched in February 2007 to play a leadership role in the use and development of tools and techniques to reconstruct and analyze the history of great works art, monumental structures as well as archaeological sites and artifacts. CISA3 operates at the intersection of art and science – seeking objective knowledge and a more factual basis for understanding art history and the creative genius of artists and civilizations. The center also explores methodologies and solutions to problems of art conservation, while training a new generation of interdisciplinary experts to work in this emerging field.

Human sized Laser Scanning Scope, Ernst Ruska's Room

http://www.fujihata.jp/ruska04/

Instead of electron beam, the system uses laser light for scanning the object and measuring intensity of the ambient light of the room by photo diaod. Computer controls the scanning position and the position of the intensity on the screen image, such as like a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope.)

SEM is a surprizing technology to make images without optical lenses. It is questioning what is the meaning of seeing. And more surprizingly, when you want to see more detail by using SEM, the object will be electrostatic charged by the beam of electron of SEM. This means the sensing power (electron beam) can destry the obejct which we want to see more. DEMO

Exposure, 3D LIDAR Data Visualization

http://www.sester.net/projects/exposure/exposure4K.html

EXPOSURE offers surveillance imagery consisting of x-rayed trucks containing smuggled items, such as a Rolls Royce, three million cigarettes embedded in scrap metal, and 2.5 tons of marijuana packed inside 896 rubber bales. In one of the projections, an x-rayed truck is elegantly juxtaposed with a house, which eventually overtakes the entire screen. The house, located in northern California's East Bay Hills, was scanned by laser. The juxtaposition of an exposed private space and privately-owned commercial vehicles shows how technology can deliberately be used for surveillance, treating all forms with an egalitarian structural approach, while unexpectedly allowing the artist to expand the language of abstraction in art practice: the images are beautiful as forms, yet violent because they deconstruct the pervasive nature of x-ray technology when used as a form of control.

icinema, Spherecam

http://www.icinema.unsw.edu.au/projects/infra_spherecam_1.html
While advances in digital technology have revolutionised the field of cinema and multimedia, for a number of theoretical and technical reasons, the domain of immersive high-resolution digital video recording using global capture systems, has yet to take advantage of these developments. The promise of fully immersive high-resolution digital capture proposed by this system is twofold. Firstly, its unprecedented field of view opens up the process of documentation to global information capture and representational flexibility implied by such a recording system. Video imaging is currently held captive to older pictorial paradigms of visualisation dominated by the picture plane and the frame. The entrenched role of the frame in conventional cinema places severe limits on the immersive quality of the information recorded and on the ability to generate large and seamless informational spaces to navigate. Secondly, high-resolution digital capture resolves information at a specification equivalent to conventional large format film cameras, but with the advantages of enhanced portability, offering far longer recording times, immediate access to the recorded data, non-linear interactive capabilities, and much lower overall production, post-production and presentation costs.

Peter Greenaway

WikiPedia
Renown british film maker Peter Greenaway has been working on a series of live performances through music and projections onto great historical paintings. Ten Classic Paintings Revisited formulates a dialogue "between 8,000 years of art and 112 years of cinema". In 2008 he began collaborating with Factum Arte on his interpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper, projected onto a facsimile in Santa Maria delle Grazie which was accompanied by a three dimensional replica of the table portrayed in the painting.

Alien Vision: Exploring the Electromagnetic Spectrum with Imaging Technology

http://www.alienvision.org/index.html

What if we could see in any wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum, from gamma-rays to radio waves? How would the world appear to us? The answer is that technology enables us to "see" in nearly any wavelength we like, and the world we see is full of surprises! The unaided human eye can only see one octave of the electromagnetic spectrum, yet electronic imaging technology has allowed us to observe the world in over 60 octaves!

Computed Tomography Project, Australian Synchrotron

http://www.synchrotron.org.au/index.php/about-us/our-facilities/engineering/computed-tomography-project

The remote CT service developed in this project will help the researchers to simulate and test the planned experiments "in silicon" in preparation for the real CT experiments. Additional modules in our software will facilitate the process by allowing the user to modify, visualize and analyze the data at any stage of the CT simulation and reconstruction process. During the experimental stage, the remote CT reconstruction and visualization services will enable improved cooperation between the small number of researchers typically conducting the experiment at the Synchrotron and other members of the research team at different locations in Australia or even overseas. Quick pre-processing, reconstruction and visualization of experimental CT data will allow the researchers to make the necessary adjustments during the experimental shift and modify the experimental conditions accordingly. This will significantly increase the productivity of synchrotron-based CT compared with the conventional mode of operation, where the CT reconstruction is typically performed "off-line" after the experiments, when the researchers have returned back to their home base. In the post-experiment stage, the access to centralized supercomputing facilities running efficient CT reconstruction and visualization codes will allow for optimal post-processing and analysis of the experimental CT data.

Vieuxtemps Project

http://www.bormanviolins.com/vieuxtemps_project.asp
Geoffrey Fushi of Bein & Fushi Rare Violins invited an international team of experts, to study what is considered by many to be one of the world’s greatest violins, the 1741 “Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesu. In addition, a 1707 Stradivari, a 1742 Guarneri, and a 1752 J.B. Guadagnini were also studied.

Among other tests performed by the team, Terry performed CT scans at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on the instruments. The process allows for an in-depth study of the instruments in a completely non-invasive manner. In the 30 seconds that it takes to scan an instrument, a wealth of information is obtained; providing valuable insight for modern makers.

The work of photographer Judith K. McMillan takes the examination of plants to a new realm. Using an X-ray machine as her camera, McMillan photographs the internal structures of plants, revealing the beauty of natural forms invisible to the human eye. Judith McMillan’s images are ephemeral, eerie, and beautiful. The gladioli, poppies, water lilies, orchids, locust seeds and ferns that become the focus of her work take on a strangely translucent life, opening our minds to an alternate view of reality.

Thermography as Art

http://redlens.net/2011/01/09/thermography-as-art/
Typically a thermographic image is simply "grayscale," meaning that the individual pixels are assigned a level of gray (from black to white) indicating their temperature.

Black will indicate the coolest pixel in an image, while white will indicate the hottest. During the capture process (and during the subsequent manipulation) we have the option of assigning a variety of other colors to the image, such as a simple Gradient of two colors or complex Gradients of many colors (there are many uses for complex Gradients).

Especially in process and electrical thermographic applications the assignment of colorful gradients can produce very aesthetically pleasing imagery.
