I have always been interested in possibilities. Unlikely possibilities in particular. What is it like, to be able to navigate according to sound? What is it like, to have a giant database at my disposal and be able to access these data by will, or by some simple, instinctive means? I am surrounded by sounds throughout my everyday life, but what is it like, to bathe in refined and crafted sound? What is it like to be a spider approaching the prey caught in its web on a rainy day? What is it like to be put in a space where every movement I make is translated into a sonic reflection?

In this hectic age, both our visual and our aural perception is highly desensitized. It is not uncommon to overload our senses, but to be put in a situation where one can truly appreciate sounds on an intimate level? That’s a different story.

Enter Field of Sound, through which I seek to create something that mocks both the natural and the artificial, where, for the visitors of this space, immersion in an aurally hypersensitive reality takes place.

Field of Sound is a sound installation that takes on the form of a gigantic web molded into the shape of a dome. This Web structure is contained in a transparent cubic structure. The moment visitors enter the Web structure, everything they do become consequential in what sounds they will hear. The multiple layers of the Web structure will transform the visitors’ movements into ambient sounds, trigger specific sounds according to the visitors’ physical contact with the webs, and reflect light to give the whole space an ever changing atmosphere. Furthermore, the cubic structure that contains the web structure will have embedded sensors that transcribe exterior motifs caused by the weather into impulses heard by the visitors of Field of Sound.

Imagine this.

It is three o'clock in the afternoon. The weather looks gloomy, a gray sky so heavy with humidity you could literally smell the rain.

You come across a courtyard, and something catches your attention. An odd looking cubic structure is situated in the center of the courtyard, its walls filled with a pattern consisted of intersection lines. Upon closer inspection, you realize that these intersecting lines are not patterns on the walls of the cubic structure, but what is contained inside it. The walls of the cube are transparent. You decide to venture inside for a closer look.

The minute you enter the cubic structure, you are enveloped in an ambiance unlike any other. You soon realize, that you have become a hum. Yes, a hum. You begin to walk around, and curiously enough, the hum pulsates gently, perfectly in synchronization with every steps you've taken.

However intrigued you are by the strange presence you've unwittingly established, your attention has now shifted to the web-like structure that now surrounds you.

There is a strangely serene quality to it, the strings of the web-like structure seems to be changing their colors constantly but subtly. Confounded and in disbelieve, you decide to reach out and touch one of the strings.

The moment your finger tip comes in contact with the string, it is as if the moment has frozen and time is stopped. You have heard a sound. You take a few steps back, and the hum of your presence takes a few steps back with you. You tread to the opposite side of the web-like structure and unconsciously start to lean against the wall. As your back touches the wall you hear another sound, this time much richer and much more complex. You realize now, that you have walked into an electro-magnetic field, with walls that make music as you touch them.

You continue exploring the possibilities of sound, until all of a sudden you hear raindrops like you've never heard them before. Looking up at the transparent roof of the cubic structure, you see drops of water splashed against the roof. By now, the whole space is filled with sounds of raindrops falling directly on the web and triggering corresponding sounds. The only thing is, you're perfectly dry, and so is everything else in the cubic structure.
